The current issue, in the run up to the general election, reminds us that education is a political issue. Given the experience of education policy over vary many years, it can be understandable, for teachers and parents to call for education to stop being a political football, and to ‘take politics out of education’. But education is about how we fashion the world we want to live in, and is, and should always be, political. The challenge is to not confuse removing democratic mechanisms in schooling with ‘taking the politics out of education’, but rather to make the politics explicit – and to make sure that everyone, not just the policy elites, are involved in the discussions.
